Was very privileged to visit South Africa in 2010 to work on a couple of projects.
Mural painted for local residents the Freedom Park Community in Johannesburg, South Africa. Steve Biko was a South African activist who lived his life under and fought against apartheid, the South African government racist policy which sanctioned racial segregation and discrimination against non white people. He was cofounder of the South African Students’ Organization (SASO) rooted in the philosophy of Black consciousness, which encouraged Black Africans to recognize their inherent dignity and self-worth and uphold their own culture and language. Under apartheid everything to do with black African culture was banned, black Africans had no rights and all schooling was taught only in English and Afrikaans (language of the white South Africans). In the 1970s the Black Consciousness Movement spread from university campuses and schools into urban Black communities throughout South Africa leading to the Soweto uprisings of 1976. In September 1977 Steve Biko was brutally beaten to death in police custody. Every year people around South Africa honour his Legacy and this mural was painted during that time, September 2010.
